Microwave Radiation & Our Children

Long-term health risks from wireless technologies, using microwave radiation, are not yet fully understood;
however ongoing research indicates exposure to wireless emissions may be harmful.

Today’s children are the first generation exposed to constant, long-term microwave radiation.

Our Children

Baby on Cell Phone

In 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified "radiofrequency [RF] electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans," the same health risk category as Lead and DDT. This applies to “the radiation emitted by base‐station antennas, radio/TV towers, radar, Wi‐Fi, smart meters, etc.,” said Robert Baan, the author of the IARC statement on RF.

Children can be exposed nearly everywhere to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in the form of microwave radiation from:

  • Wi-Fi, WiMAX, TETRA
  • Wireless Laptops
  • iPads
  • Wireless Routers
  • Cell Phones
  • DECT Products (Cordless Phones, Baby Monitors, home automation, etc.)
  • Smart Meters
  • Cell Phone Towers / Masts and Base‐Station Antenna School District Leases

Wi-Fi allows computers, iPads, cellphones and other devices to connect to a network wirelessly, without cables, using pulses of microwave radiation which have been shown to be harmful.

Studies show health effects far below federal exposure standards, which were set in 1996 for limited adult exposures, and only protect from burns and shock.

Mounting Evidence

1988 ● United States Air Force concluded Microwave (MW) radiation “is known to have a biological effect on living organisms.”

2000 ● T-Mobile-commissioned study: “On the cellular level, a multitude of studies found the type of damage from high frequency electromagnetic fields which is important for cancer initiation and cancer promotion.”

2013 ● American Academy of Environmental Medicine strongly supports the use of wired Internet connections in schools.

2013 ● American Academy of Pediatrics, (60,000 pediatric doctors) recommends the reassessment of wireless radiation standards.

2013 ● British Columbia Teachers' Federation supports resolution ceasing the install of Wi-Fi and other wireless networks in schools.

2013 ● Belgium bans the marketing and sale of mobile phones to children under seven as of March 2014.

2013 ● India Supreme Court upholds State of Rajasthan High Court decision to remove all cell towers from the vicinity of schools, colleges, hospitals and playgrounds.

2014 ● Swedish studies concluded, “glioma and also acoustic neuroma are caused by RF-EMF emissions from wireless phones… [and] current guidelines for exposure should be urgently revised.”

Wi-Fi in Schools: Testing for Microwave Radiation Dangers in the Classroom

Odorless, Tasteless, Invisible

Studies show radiation from cell phones, Wi-Fi and other wireless devices impact cognitive function; behavior; stress response; sleep quality; fertility; DNA; the fetus and newborn; our immune, neurological, and reproductive systems; and can lead to tumors and cancers.

Chronic exposure to microwave radiation is especially harmful during pregnancy and childhood due to developing nervous systems, thinner skulls, smaller brains, more conductive brain tissue and higher water content. The elderly and those with preexisting illness are also particularly vulnerable.

In order to protect the health, development, and learning potential of our youth, experts are asking for wired technologies and do not agree with health protection agencies which allow or support the use of microwave radiation technologies in schools.

As consumers, we are left in the dark.

Reported Health Effects

One or more of the following:

Neurological: headaches, insomnia, nausea, dizziness, anxiety, irritability, depression, concentration and memory difficulties, weakness, fatigue, muscle spasms, joint pain, numbness and tingling, impaired learning and performance in children.

Reproductive: miscarriage, sperm and ovary damage,  male infertility.

Cardiac: shortness of breath, increased blood pressure, tachycardia, arrhythmia, heart attack.

Eyes: eye pressure, declining vision.

Additionally: tinnitus, nosebleeds, hair loss, dehydration, skin problems, digestive problems, pain in teeth, impaired sense of smell, altered calcium level in cells, melatonin and immune suppression, hormonal imbalances, diseases of the blood.

Long–Term: asthma, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction,  neurological diseases, DNA damage, and cancer.

Reduce Exposure

Turn off cell phones/PDAs when not in use — in purse, pocket, on belt, and while sleeping.

Keeping away from head and body — text, or use speaker phone for calls.

Avoid using phones in elevators, cars, buses — radiation is higher.

Use wired headsets with hollow-tube segments.

Replace cordless/DECT phones/baby monitors.

Upgrade to wired Internet — Ethernet, Fiber Optic, Powerline Adapters.

Replace wireless security/home automation systems with wired systems.

Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in computers — use wired keyboards, mice, headsets, etc.
